Ranibizumab + mitomycin C is a combination of two pharmaceutical agents used primarily in ophthalmology and oncology. Ranibizumab is a recombinant humanized monoclonal antibody fragment (Fab) that binds to and inhibits all isoforms of vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A), thereby preventing abnormal blood vessel growth and leakage in the eye. It is mainly indicated for wet age-related macular degeneration, diabetic macular edema, retinal vein occlusion, and diabetic retinopathy[1][6]. Mitomycin C is an antitumor antibiotic that acts as an alkylating agent, producing DNA cross-links which inhibit DNA synthesis and cell replication, leading to cell death. It is used as adjunctive therapy in glaucoma surgery (trabeculectomy) to prevent scarring, as well as for various cancers including bladder cancer[2][4][8]. The combination has been studied experimentally for use in ocular surgeries such as trabeculectomy or filtration procedures where both anti-fibrotic (mitomycin C) and antiangiogenic (ranibizumab) effects may be beneficial[3][5].
