Overview

A combination therapy consisting of the anti-VEGF monoclonal antibody fragment ranibizumab and the photosensitizer verteporfin, used in conjunction with photodynamic therapy (PDT). This regimen is designed to treat neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) by targeting multiple pathways: ranibizumab inhibits vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A) to reduce vascular permeability and angiogenesis, while verteporfin PDT causes selective vascular occlusion of existing choroidal neovascular membranes. The Fondazione G.B. Bietti, IRCCS evaluated this combination in the Phase 2 LUVI study to determine if the dual approach improves visual outcomes or reduces the treatment burden compared to monotherapy.
