Rebamipide is a mucosal protective agent and quinolinone derivative originally developed for the treatment of gastric ulcers. In the field of ophthalmology, it is being developed as a topical treatment for dry eye syndrome. KSR-001 (specifically the development code KSR-001-03) is a solubilized, clear ophthalmic solution formulation developed by Kukje Pharm. This formulation is designed to improve upon existing rebamipide suspensions, which are known to cause side effects such as blurred vision. Rebamipide works by stimulating the production of mucins (such as MUC1, MUC4, and MUC5AC) from conjunctival goblet cells and corneal epithelial cells, and by increasing the levels of prostaglandin E2. These actions help to stabilize the tear film, protect the ocular surface, and promote the healing of corneal and conjunctival injuries.
