A recombinant COVID-19 (XBB) trimer protein vaccine is a subunit, protein-based vaccine designed to protect against SARS-CoV‑2 Omicron subvariants, particularly those in the XBB lineage such as XBB.1.5 and its descendants. The antigen is a self-assembled spike-protein trimer, produced using an insect cell expression system, and formulated with an oil-in-water emulsion adjuvant to enhance immunogenicity[6][1]. The mechanism of action involves inducing neutralizing antibodies and T-cell responses targeting the spike receptor-binding domain of SARS-CoV‑2 Omicron variants[6][3][1]. Developed primarily by WestVac Biopharma, this platform has demonstrated robust neutralization against current circulating Omicron sublineages including JN.1, KP.2, and KP.3[6][1]. It has received emergency use authorization in China for prevention of COVID‑19 caused by these variants.
