Overview

The recombinant COVID-19 vaccine (Sf9 cell) is a protein subunit vaccine developed by WestVac Biopharma and Sichuan University's West China Medical Center. It utilizes the baculovirus expression vector system (BEVS) in *Spodoptera frugiperda* (Sf9) insect cells to produce the SARS-CoV-2 spike (S) protein. This platform allows for rapid, high-yield production of recombinant proteins. The vaccine is typically formulated with an aluminum-based adjuvant (aluminum hydroxide) to enhance immunogenicity. It was granted emergency use authorization in China in December 2022 and has been evaluated in clinical trials as both a primary vaccination series and a heterologous booster dose against various SARS-CoV-2 variants.
