Overview

Recombinant human apolipoprotein(a) kringle V is a biologic drug consisting of the kringle V domain of human apolipoprotein(a), produced recombinantly. It functions primarily as an inhibitor of angiogenesis by interfering with the activation of focal adhesion kinase and inhibiting endothelial cell migration. This leads to suppression of new blood vessel formation both in vitro and in vivo. The drug also induces mitochondrial-mediated apoptosis in tumor cells and tumor-associated endothelial cells, thereby suppressing tumor growth. Its anti-angiogenic activity is associated with down-regulation of actin stress fiber/focal adhesion formation and inhibition of capillary formation[1][3][4][8]. Recombinant forms such as rhLK8 have been studied for their potential use as cancer therapeutics due to these properties.
