Recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2) is a potent osteoinductive cytokine belonging to the transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) superfamily. It acts by binding to specific receptors on the surface of mesenchymal stem cells, triggering a signaling cascade that promotes their differentiation into osteoblasts, thereby stimulating new bone formation. In the context of the Northern Orthopaedic Division study in Denmark, rhBMP-2 is combined with a bovine type 1 collagen carrier to serve as a substitute for autologous bone grafting in patients undergoing bone docking procedures following Ilizarov treatment for arthritis or degenerative bone disorders. This approach aims to reduce the morbidity associated with harvesting bone from the patient's own iliac crest while promoting effective ossification at the surgical site.
