This is a combination therapy consisting of recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH), a biologic agent that mimics endogenous human growth hormone to stimulate tissue and linear growth as well as regulate protein, carbohydrate, lipid, and mineral metabolism[3][9], and pioglitazone, an oral small molecule thiazolidinedione that acts as an insulin sensitizer by activating peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ)[7]. The combination has been studied in abdominally obese adults with impaired glucose tolerance to assess whether it can reduce visceral adipose tissue (VAT) while improving insulin sensitivity. The rationale is that while rhGH alone may worsen glucose tolerance due to its lipolytic effects, the addition of pioglitazone can attenuate this diabetogenic effect by enhancing insulin sensitivity. Clinical studies have shown that the combination reduces VAT and improves metabolic parameters more effectively than either agent alone[1][2].
