Recombinant human interleukin-2 (Ser125) is a biologic therapy being investigated for the treatment of autoimmune diseases, specifically rheumatoid arthritis. Developed by Beijing SL PHARM and evaluated in clinical trials by Peking University People's Hospital, this drug is a modified form of the cytokine interleukin-2 where the cysteine at position 125 is replaced by serine to improve stability. When administered at low doses, it selectively binds to the high-affinity IL-2 receptor on regulatory T cells (Tregs), promoting their expansion and function to restore immune tolerance without activating pro-inflammatory effector T cells. In clinical studies for rheumatoid arthritis, it has been evaluated as an add-on therapy to methotrexate and loxoprofen to address the dysfunction of Treg cells characteristic of the disease.
