Overview

This combination therapy consists of recombinant interferon-alpha (IFN-α) and recombinant interleukin-6 (IL-6), investigated as a 'differentiation therapy' for patients with recurrent multiple myeloma. Interferon-alpha is a cytokine that exerts direct anti-proliferative and pro-apoptotic effects on malignant plasma cells while also enhancing the host's immune response. Interleukin-6, although typically a growth factor for myeloma cells, is used in this specific protocol to potentially induce the differentiation of myeloma cells or sensitize them to the inhibitory effects of interferon-alpha. The treatment was evaluated in clinical trials led by the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins to determine if the synergistic application of these two cytokines could improve outcomes in patients who had failed multiple prior therapies.
