Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Recombinant lipocalin-2:siderophore:Fe (rLcn2) is an iron-loaded recombinant form of lipocalin-2 (Lcn2), also known as neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL). It is complexed with a bacterial siderophore (such as enterobactin) and ferric iron (Fe3+). In preclinical models of kidney transplantation and acute kidney injury, perioperative administration of rLcn2 acts as a renoprotective agent. It delivers iron intracellularly to proximal tubular epithelial cells via receptor-mediated endocytosis, which preserves mitochondrial function, prevents apoptosis, and maintains microvascular dilatory function. Additionally, rLcn2 modulates the adaptive immune response by selectively reducing the infiltration and activation of cytotoxic CD8+ T cells and effector memory T cells in the renal allograft, thereby mitigating acute rejection.
