Overview

This vaccine is an inhaled, recombinant adenovirus type 5 (Ad5) vectored formulation specifically engineered to target the B.1.1.529 (Omicron) variant of SARS-CoV-2. Developed by CanSino Biologics in collaboration with institutions such as the Chongqing Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the vaccine utilizes a replication-deficient Ad5 platform to deliver the genetic sequence of the Omicron spike protein. Unlike traditional intramuscular injections, this formulation is administered via oral inhalation using a nebulizer, which is designed to trigger mucosal immunity in the respiratory tract (including secretory IgA) in addition to systemic humoral and cellular immune responses. It is primarily being investigated as a booster dose to enhance protection against variant-driven breakthrough infections in individuals who have completed a primary vaccination series.
