Overview

Recombinant Protective Antigen + Anthrax Vaccine Adsorbed refers to a clinical evaluation framework or combination involving two distinct anthrax vaccines: a next-generation recombinant Protective Antigen (rPA) vaccine and the licensed Anthrax Vaccine Adsorbed (AVA), known commercially as BioThrax. The rPA vaccine is a protein subunit vaccine consisting of the purified 83-kDa protective antigen of *Bacillus anthracis*, typically produced via recombinant DNA technology and formulated with an aluminum hydroxide adjuvant (Alhydrogel). AVA is a cell-free filtrate vaccine derived from an attenuated strain of *B. anthracis* adsorbed to aluminum hydroxide. Both vaccines aim to induce neutralizing antibodies against the Protective Antigen, which is the critical component for the entry of anthrax toxins (lethal toxin and edema toxin) into host cells. This specific combination or comparative study was spearheaded by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) to optimize dosing and safety profiles for future anthrax immunization strategies.
