Overview

The recombinant SARS-CoV-2 B.1.1.529 variant vaccine (adenovirus type 5 vector) is a viral vector vaccine developed to provide targeted protection against the Omicron variant of COVID-19. It utilizes a replication-deficient adenovirus type 5 (Ad5) platform to deliver the genetic sequence of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein specifically from the B.1.1.529 (Omicron) lineage. Developed by CanSino Biologics in collaboration with the Chongqing Center for Disease Control and Prevention and the Academy of Military Medical Sciences, the vaccine is designed to induce both humoral and cellular immune responses. It has been investigated for administration via both intramuscular injection and mucosal inhalation, with the latter intended to stimulate respiratory tract immunity and potentially reduce transmission. This candidate represents a variant-adapted update to the original Ad5-nCoV (Convidecia) vaccine.
