The recombinant SARS-CoV-2 vaccine (chimpanzee adenoviral vector), identified by the code name Y2020, is a viral vector vaccine developed by Walvax Biotechnology in collaboration with Tsinghua University and Tianjin Medical University. It utilizes a replication-deficient chimpanzee adenovirus platform to deliver the genetic sequence encoding the spike (S) protein of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Upon intramuscular injection, the viral vector enters host cells and facilitates the expression of the spike protein, which acts as an antigen to trigger both humoral and cellular immune responses. This vaccine candidate was designed to provide protection against COVID-19 and has progressed through Phase 1 and Phase 2 clinical trials to evaluate its safety, tolerability, and immunogenicity. While Walvax has also pursued mRNA-based vaccine candidates, the chimpanzee adenoviral vector platform remains a significant part of its infectious disease portfolio.
