Red blood cell (RBC) transfusion is a biological therapeutic intervention consisting of the intravenous administration of concentrated erythrocytes derived from donated human blood. It is primarily used to treat anemia by increasing the hemoglobin concentration and improving oxygen delivery to tissues. In the context of the MINT (Myocardial Ischemia and Transfusion) trial, led by Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, researchers evaluated the efficacy of liberal versus restrictive transfusion strategies in patients with acute myocardial infarction and anemia. The trial compared a liberal strategy (transfusion threshold of hemoglobin <10 g/dL) against a restrictive strategy (threshold <7-8 g/dL) to determine the optimal management of oxygen supply-demand mismatch in the setting of cardiac ischemia.
