Overview

This refers to the therapeutic use of donated healthy red blood cells in the context of the TAPS2 (Transfusion Antenatally in Pregnant Women with Sickle Cell Disease) trial conducted by Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust. The intervention involves serial prophylactic exchange blood transfusion (SPEBT) using automated apheresis technology. This procedure mechanically removes the patient's sickle-shaped red blood cells and simultaneously replaces them with healthy donor red blood cells containing normal hemoglobin A. The primary therapeutic goal is to maintain the percentage of hemoglobin S (HbS%) below 30% throughout pregnancy to prevent vaso-occlusive crises and improve both maternal and infant outcomes, such as reducing the risk of pre-eclampsia and fetal growth restriction.
