Red cell + whole blood refers to the combined use or transfusion of both packed red blood cells (RBCs) and whole blood. Red cells (often administered as packed red blood cells) are primarily used to increase oxygen-carrying capacity in patients with anemia or acute bleeding. Whole blood contains all components of human blood—red cells, white cells, platelets, and plasma—and is typically reserved for situations requiring rapid replacement of all circulating components, such as severe trauma or major surgery with massive hemorrhage[1][5][6]. The mechanism of action is physiological replacement; transfused RBCs restore oxygen delivery while plasma and other elements in whole blood support volume expansion and hemostasis. This combination may be used when both targeted oxygen delivery (via RBCs) and full-volume resuscitation (via whole blood) are needed.
