Overview

remdesivir + tocilizumab is a **combination therapy** involving the antiviral small molecule remdesivir and the monoclonal antibody tocilizumab, used experimentally for the management of severe COVID-19. **Remdesivir** is a nucleoside analog that inhibits the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase of SARS-CoV-2, blocking viral replication. **Tocilizumab** is a humanized monoclonal antibody that targets the interleukin-6 receptor (IL-6R), inhibiting IL-6-mediated inflammatory signaling implicated in cytokine storm and acute respiratory distress syndrome. Combined use is intended to address both viral replication (remdesivir) and hyperinflammatory response (tocilizumab) in COVID-19. Clinical studies indicate the combination results in improved clinical outcomes (reduced mortality, faster clinical improvement, shorter ICU and hospital stay, improved lung recovery) compared to corticosteroid therapy, but does not demonstrate a statistically significant survival advantage[1][2].
