This drug combination consists of remifentanil, propofol, and prilocaine, utilized as a deep sedation regimen for patients undergoing gynecological procedures such as transcervical resection of the endometrium, fibroids, or polyps. Remifentanil is a potent, short-acting synthetic opioid that acts as a mu-opioid receptor agonist to provide analgesia. Propofol is an intravenous sedative-hypnotic agent that works by modulating GABA-A receptors in the central nervous system. Prilocaine (often administered as Citanest) is a local anesthetic of the amide type that blocks voltage-gated sodium channels to provide regional pain relief. The University of Aarhus has investigated this specific combination to compare deep sedation in spontaneously breathing patients against traditional general anesthesia for same-day surgical gynecological interventions.
