Overview

Remifentanil + sufentanil refers to the comparison of two potent, short-acting synthetic opioids evaluated in the REMIDENT clinical trial (NCT01910285). In this Phase 4 study conducted by the University Hospital, Toulouse, these agents were compared head-to-head for their efficacy in facilitating tracheal intubation without the use of neuromuscular blocking agents (muscle relaxants) in patients undergoing outpatient surgical tooth extraction. Both drugs function as selective agonists at the mu-opioid receptor (MOR). Remifentanil (commercially known as Ultiva) is characterized by its rapid onset and extremely short duration of action due to metabolism by non-specific plasma esterases, while sufentanil (commercially known as Sufenta) is a highly potent analogue of fentanyl. The trial specifically examined these agents when co-administered with propofol for anesthetic induction.
