Overview

Remimazolam is an ultra-short acting benzodiazepine used intravenously for the induction and maintenance of procedural sedation in adults undergoing procedures lasting 30 minutes or less. It acts on GABA receptors like midazolam but has organ-independent metabolism like remifentanil, being metabolized by non-specific tissue esterases in the blood. This gives it a rapid onset, short duration of action, and predictable recovery profile. Flumazenil can be used as a reversal agent. Remimazolam was approved by the FDA in July 2020.
