Overview

remimazolam + methylphenidate is a drug combination consisting of the ultra-short-acting benzodiazepine remimazolam and the central nervous system stimulant methylphenidate. This combination is primarily investigated for use in patients undergoing modified electroconvulsive therapy (MECT). Remimazolam acts as a positive allosteric modulator of the GABA-A receptor, providing rapid-onset and short-duration anesthesia suitable for the procedure. Methylphenidate, a norepinephrine-dopamine reuptake inhibitor, is utilized in this context to potentially improve the quality of the induced seizures (which can be suppressed by anesthetics) and to facilitate faster recovery from anesthesia. The combination is being studied by researchers at the Chaohu Hospital Affiliated to Anhui Medical University as an alternative to traditional anesthetics like propofol to optimize clinical outcomes in psychiatric patients receiving MECT.
