Overview

Remimazolam + sufentanil is a combination of two intravenous drugs used primarily for the induction and maintenance of general anesthesia and procedural sedation. Remimazolam is an ultra-short-acting benzodiazepine that acts as a positive allosteric modulator at the γ-aminobutyric acid type A (GABA-A) receptor, producing sedative, anxiolytic, and hypnotic effects with rapid onset and offset due to esterase-mediated metabolism[4][5]. Sufentanil is a potent synthetic opioid analgesic that acts as an agonist at the mu-opioid receptor, providing strong analgesia during surgical procedures[8]. The combination leverages the sedative properties of remimazolam with the analgesic effects of sufentanil to achieve effective anesthesia or deep sedation with hemodynamic stability and minimal respiratory depression compared to other regimens. This combination has been studied in various settings including induction for bariatric surgery in obese patients[1][6], colonoscopy sedation[2], and surgical abortion[3].
