REP 2139-Ca + peginterferon alfa-2a is a combination therapy under investigation for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis D virus (HDV) co-infection. REP 2139-Ca is a nucleic acid polymer (phosphorothioate oligoribonucleotide) that inhibits the release of HBV subviral particles, including hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), thereby enhancing immune control over HBV infection. Peginterferon alfa-2a is a recombinant, long-lasting form of interferon that stimulates antiviral immune responses by binding to type I interferon receptors and activating downstream signaling pathways. The combination has demonstrated potent antiviral effects in phase 2 clinical trials, leading to functional control of both HBV and HDV infections with normalization of liver enzymes in a significant proportion of patients one year after therapy[1][5][6].
