Overview

Reserpine + triamterene is a fixed-dose combination antihypertensive drug, primarily used for the treatment of hypertension. This combination is known as compound reserpine and triamterene tablets (CRTT) and was developed by Chinese scientists. Reserpine acts as an adrenergic blocking agent that depletes catecholamines (such as norepinephrine) from peripheral sympathetic nerve endings, thereby reducing blood pressure. Triamterene is a potassium-sparing diuretic that inhibits sodium reabsorption in the distal nephron while conserving potassium, contributing to its antihypertensive effect. CRTT exerts its effects through multiple mechanisms including modulation of vascular tone, adrenergic receptor activity, protein kinase signaling pathways (notably PI3K/Akt/eNOS), cGMP/PKG pathway activation in vascular smooth muscle cells, and enhancement of endothelial nitric oxide synthase activity[5][6][2]. The combination aims to provide effective blood pressure control while minimizing risks such as hypokalemia.
