RH5.2-VLP + Matrix-M is an experimental blood-stage malaria vaccine candidate developed by the University of Oxford. It consists of a re-engineered and stabilized RH5 immunogen (RH5.2) that includes only the alpha-helical core of the Plasmodium falciparum reticulocyte-binding protein homolog 5 (RH5), with disordered regions removed to enhance the induction of growth-inhibitory antibodies. This immunogen is bioconjugated to hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) virus-like particles (VLPs) using SpyTag-SpyCatcher technology and is formulated with Novavax's saponin-based Matrix-M adjuvant. The vaccine aims to prevent malaria by blocking the invasion of human erythrocytes by P. falciparum merozoites.
