Drug intelligence / Profile preview
[188Re]-bis(perthiobenzoato)(dithiobenzoato)rhenium (III), commonly referred to as 188Re-SSS, is an experimental lipophilic radiopharmaceutical developed by the Centre Eugène Marquis for the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The complex consists of the beta-emitting radionuclide rhenium-188 coordinated with sulfur-containing ligands, specifically bis(perthiobenzoato) and dithiobenzoato groups. This chemical structure imparts high lipophilicity, allowing the drug to be dissolved in Lipiodol (ethiodized oil), a contrast agent that is selectively taken up and retained by hypervascular liver tumors. Administered via transarterial radioembolization (TARE), the 188Re-SSS/Lipiodol formulation delivers localized, high-energy beta radiation (2.1 MeV) directly to the tumor site, causing lethal DNA damage in malignant cells while minimizing exposure to healthy liver parenchyma. This approach is particularly investigated for patients with advanced HCC or those who are not candidates for surgical resection.
