Overview

Rho(D) immune globulin is a sterile solution of human polyclonal IgG antibodies directed against the Rh(D) antigen on red blood cells. It is primarily used to prevent Rh isoimmunization in Rh-negative individuals exposed to Rh-positive blood—most commonly in pregnant or postpartum women to prevent hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN). The drug works by binding to any fetal Rh-positive erythrocytes that enter maternal circulation and promoting their clearance before the mother's immune system can mount an antibody response. Rho(D) immune globulin is also indicated for treating immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP), where it increases platelet counts by inhibiting autoantibody-mediated platelet clearance. The product is derived from pooled human plasma from immunized donors and administered intramuscularly or intravenously[1][2][4][5].
