Overview

Rhubarb + mirabilite is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) combination therapy frequently employed for its potent anti-inflammatory, anti-edematous, and antimicrobial properties. The combination typically consists of the dried root and rhizome of Rheum species (Dahuang) and the mineral mirabilite (Mangxiao, sodium sulfate decahydrate). In clinical practice, it is often applied topically as a paste or external compress to treat localized inflammatory conditions, including surgical site infections, postoperative wound complications, and acute pancreatitis. Rhubarb contributes bioactive anthraquinones such as emodin and rhein, which exhibit broad-spectrum antibacterial activity and inhibit pro-inflammatory signaling pathways. Mirabilite acts as an osmotic agent, drawing out fluid to reduce tissue edema and promote the clearance of inflammatory exudates.
