The combination of rifampicin, isoniazid, pyrazinamide, and levofloxacin is used primarily for treating tuberculosis (TB), particularly isoniazid-monoresistant tuberculosis. This combination represents a treatment regimen recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) since 2018. The regimen typically consists of these four drugs administered together for a duration of 6 months. Each component plays a specific role in combating TB infection: * Rifampicin belongs to the class of antibiotics and works to kill or prevent the growth of bacteria. * Isoniazid is a first-line anti-TB drug that may be used in high doses for certain resistant strains. * Pyrazinamide is another first-line anti-TB drug that works in combination with the others. * Levofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone that strengthens the regimen, particularly for isoniazid-resistant TB. This combination has been studied in clinical settings and has shown effectiveness against isoniazid-monoresistant tuberculosis. The WHO made a conditional recommendation for this regimen, though initially with very low certainty in the estimates of effect. Recent studies have continued to evaluate the efficacy of this combination compared to other regimens.
