Overview

Rifampicin + sulfamethoxazole is a combination of two antibacterial agents, rifampicin and sulfamethoxazole. Rifampicin is a rifamycin antibiotic that inhibits bacterial DNA-dependent RNA polymerase, thereby suppressing RNA synthesis and leading to bactericidal activity. Sulfamethoxazole is a sulfonamide antibiotic that inhibits dihydropteroate synthase in the folate synthesis pathway, resulting in impaired bacterial DNA replication and cell growth. This combination has demonstrated synergistic or additive effects against certain bacteria, including Mycobacterium tuberculosis and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), with studies showing enhanced efficacy compared to monotherapy[2][1]. The combination may be considered as an alternative regimen for multidrug-resistant infections where standard therapies are not suitable or effective[2][1].
