This combination therapy consists of the non-absorbable antibiotic rifaximin and a probiotic mixture containing *Bacillus subtilis* and *Enterococcus faecium*. Rifaximin acts by inhibiting bacterial RNA synthesis through binding to the beta-subunit of bacterial DNA-dependent RNA polymerase, effectively reducing bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine with minimal systemic absorption. The probiotics *Bacillus subtilis* and *Enterococcus faecium* are intended to restore healthy gut microbiota, inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria, and improve intestinal barrier function. This therapeutic approach is primarily investigated and used by the Sixth Medical Center of the PLA General Hospital for treating conditions associated with gut dysbiosis, including small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and inflammatory bowel diseases like ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. It is also explored for its potential benefits in liver diseases and colorectal health.
