rifaximin + psyllium husk is a combination therapy being investigated by Bahria University for the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea (IBS-D). The regimen combines rifaximin, a non-absorbable rifamycin-derivative antibiotic, with psyllium husk, a soluble bulk-forming fiber. Rifaximin functions by targeting the gut microbiota to reduce bacterial overgrowth and inflammation, which are common drivers of IBS symptoms. Psyllium husk acts as a stool-modifying agent; in the context of diarrhea, it absorbs excess luminal water to increase stool viscosity and improve consistency. This dual-action approach aims to address both the underlying microbial dysbiosis and the primary symptom of frequent loose stools. It is currently being evaluated in a Phase 4 clinical trial comparing its efficacy against other combinations such as rifaximin with mebeverine or amitriptyline.
