ringer's solution

Ringer's solution is a sterile isotonic crystalloid electrolyte solution containing sodium chloride, potassium chloride, and calcium chloride in water for injection. It is used primarily by intravenous infusion to replace extracellular fluid and electrolytes and support hydration in adults and pediatric patients; distinct products may also be labeled for surgical irrigation. Its clinical effect is physicochemical rather than receptor-mediated: it expands the extracellular fluid compartment and supplies sodium, chloride, potassium, and calcium ions. Ringer's solution is distinct from lactated Ringer's solution, which additionally contains sodium lactate.
