Ringer's Acetate is a balanced crystalloid solution used for intravenous fluid resuscitation and electrolyte replacement. It is designed to mimic the electrolyte composition of human plasma more closely than isotonic saline (0.9% NaCl), thereby reducing the risk of hyperchloremic metabolic acidosis. Unlike Ringer's Lactate, which uses lactate as a buffering agent, Ringer's Acetate utilizes acetate. Acetate is rapidly metabolized to bicarbonate in various tissues, including muscles, making it potentially more suitable for patients with impaired liver function who may not metabolize lactate efficiently. It is primarily indicated for the treatment of extracellular dehydration, hypovolemia, and as a maintenance fluid in surgical and critically ill patients, such as those with sepsis or septic shock, to maintain acid-base balance and renal function.
