Ringer's Lactate (also known as Lactated Ringer's solution) is a balanced crystalloid intravenous fluid solution used for fluid resuscitation and maintenance. It is composed of sodium chloride, sodium lactate, potassium chloride, and calcium chloride in water, providing an electrolyte profile more similar to human plasma than 0.9% normal saline. The solution acts as an isotonic volume expander to restore intravascular volume and maintain tissue perfusion in patients with significant blood loss or dehydration. In the context of research led by the Lawson Health Research Institute and London Health Sciences Centre, it is being evaluated in a Phase 2 clinical trial (NCT01692769) for the resuscitation of severely injured pediatric trauma patients. The study aims to compare its efficacy and safety—specifically regarding the maintenance of optimal sodium levels and the reduction of hyperchloremic metabolic acidosis—against normal saline.
