Overview

rintatolimod + interferon alfa-2b is an investigational combination immunotherapy regimen being evaluated for the treatment of COVID-19 in cancer patients. Rintatolimod (brand name Ampligen) is a synthetic double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) molecule that acts as a Toll-like receptor 3 (TLR3) agonist, mimicking viral infection to stimulate the innate immune system and activate the interferon pathway. Interferon alfa-2b is a recombinant Type I interferon that provides direct antiviral activity and enhances the immune response. Developed by AIM ImmunoTech in collaboration with Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, this combination aims to promote viral clearance of SARS-CoV-2 by depriving the virus of its ability to replicate. The regimen was authorized for Phase 1/2a clinical trials in May 2020 specifically for cancer patients with mild to moderate symptomatic COVID-19, representing a repurposing of an experimental cancer therapy originally developed for solid tumors.
