Both are primarily dopamine receptor antagonists, with risperidone also acting as a serotonin 5-HT2A receptor antagonist. They are widely used in the treatment of psychiatric conditions such as schizophrenia and manic episodes associated with bipolar disorder. Clinical trials have also investigated their use in delirium, though some studies suggest they may not be more effective than placebo for this indication and can be associated with significant side effects like hyperprolactinemia and extrapyramidal symptoms.
