Ritonavir + indinavir is a combination of two small molecule HIV protease inhibitors used in the treatment of HIV infection. Both drugs act by inhibiting the activity of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) protease enzyme, which is essential for viral replication. Ritonavir is commonly used at low doses as a pharmacokinetic booster because it strongly inhibits cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4), thereby increasing plasma concentrations and prolonging the half-life of co-administered protease inhibitors such as indinavir. Indinavir, marketed under the brand name Crixivan, was one of the first potent oral HIV protease inhibitors and is typically administered in combination with other antiretroviral agents for synergistic effects and resistance prevention[1][2][4]. The ritonavir + indinavir regimen has been studied for its favorable pharmacokinetic interaction, allowing lower or less frequent dosing while maintaining efficacy[4].
