Overview

This combination therapy is being evaluated in the EPCATIII Phase 3 clinical trial (NCT04075240) for the prevention of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in patients undergoing elective total hip or knee arthroplasty. The regimen consists of a sequential administration of rivaroxaban (10 mg), a small molecule direct oral anticoagulant that acts as a Factor Xa inhibitor, followed by acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin, 81 mg), an antiplatelet agent that irreversibly inhibits cyclooxygenase enzymes. The study, led by investigator Sudeep Shivakumar, builds on the EPCAT II trial and aims to determine if aspirin monotherapy is non-inferior to this sequential combination regimen in preventing deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism in the post-operative setting.
