Overview

Ropivacaine + epinephrine is a combination of two active pharmaceutical ingredients used primarily for local or regional anesthesia in surgical procedures and acute pain management. Ropivacaine is an amide-type local anesthetic that works by blocking voltage-gated sodium channels on nerve fibers, thereby inhibiting the initiation and conduction of nerve impulses, resulting in loss of sensation in the targeted area[1][5][6]. Epinephrine acts as a vasoconstrictor, reducing blood flow at the injection site to potentially decrease systemic absorption of ropivacaine and prolong its local effect; however, clinical evidence suggests that adding epinephrine to ropivacaine does not significantly alter onset time, duration of action, or systemic absorption compared to ropivacaine alone[2][4][5]. The combination may be used for epidural blocks (including labor analgesia), major nerve blocks, and infiltration anesthesia. It is not marketed under a unique brand name but may be compounded for specific clinical use.
