Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Ropivacaine + sodium chloride is a local anesthetic solution consisting of the long-acting amide-type anesthetic ropivacaine hydrochloride dissolved in an isotonic 0.9% sodium chloride vehicle. Ropivacaine works by reversibly binding to the intracellular portion of voltage-gated sodium channels in nerve fibers, which inhibits sodium ion influx and prevents the initiation and conduction of nerve impulses, resulting in regional anesthesia and analgesia. Virginia Commonwealth University has investigated this specific combination in Phase 4 clinical trials to evaluate its pharmacokinetic profile and dermatomal coverage when administered via an erector spinae plane (ESP) block. This application is primarily intended for the management of postoperative pain, particularly in patients undergoing cardiac surgery, comparing the efficacy and safety of bolus dosing versus continuous infusion through a nerve catheter.
