Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Ropivacaine + sodium chloride is a local anesthetic formulation consisting of the long-acting amide-type anesthetic ropivacaine diluted in a 0.9% saline (NaCl) solution. Developed for use in regional anesthesia, specifically for psoas compartment blocks in the context of postoperative pain management at William Beaumont Hospitals (now Corewell Health), this combination works by blocking voltage-gated sodium channels in nerve fibers. This inhibition prevents the influx of sodium ions, thereby halting the initiation and conduction of nerve impulses and providing targeted analgesia. In clinical trials for total hip arthroplasty, this specific dilution (0.2% ropivacaine) was evaluated to optimize pain control and reduce opioid consumption following surgery.
