Overview

Ropivacaine + sufentanil is a combination of two drugs used primarily for epidural analgesia in surgical and obstetric settings. Ropivacaine is a long-acting amide local anesthetic that works by blocking sodium channels in nerve cells, thereby inhibiting nerve conduction and providing regional anesthesia. Sufentanil is a potent synthetic opioid analgesic that acts as an agonist at the mu-opioid receptor, enhancing pain relief when combined with local anesthetics. The combination provides synergistic analgesic effects, allowing for lower doses of each drug, which can reduce side effects such as motor block and nausea compared to higher doses of either agent alone. This regimen is commonly used for postoperative pain management (e.g., after total knee replacement) and labor analgesia[1][2][5][7].
