Overview
This refers to the concomitant administration of RotaTeq (Rotavirus Vaccine, Live, Oral, Pentavalent) and the Oral Poliovirus Vaccine (OPV). RotaTeq, developed by Merck Sharp & Dohme, is a live-attenuated oral vaccine containing five reassortant rotaviruses (G1, G2, G3, G4, and P1A[8]) derived from human and bovine strains, designed to prevent rotavirus gastroenteritis in infants. OPV is a live-attenuated vaccine used for active immunization against poliomyelitis. Clinical studies, including Phase 3 trials, have evaluated the safety and immunogenicity of administering these two vaccines together (concomitantly) versus separately (staggered). While some studies indicate that concomitant OPV administration may slightly reduce the immune response to certain rotavirus serotypes, high clinical efficacy against severe rotavirus gastroenteritis is generally maintained, and the safety profile remains favorable for co-administration in healthy infants.
