Overview
Rotavirus vaccine, live, oral, pentavalent, marketed under the brand name RotaTeq, is a live attenuated vaccine developed by Merck & Co. to prevent rotavirus gastroenteritis in infants. The vaccine is composed of five human-bovine reassortant rotavirus strains (serotypes G1, G2, G3, G4, and P1A[8]). These reassortants contain human rotavirus surface proteins on a bovine rotavirus (WC3) backbone, which allows the vaccine to stimulate a protective immune response against the most common human rotavirus serotypes while remaining attenuated. It is administered orally in a three-dose series, typically starting at 6 to 12 weeks of age.
