Drug intelligence / Profile preview
The pentavalent rotavirus vaccine (PRV) is a live-attenuated, oral vaccine designed to prevent severe gastroenteritis caused by rotavirus infection in infants and young children. It typically consists of five human-bovine reassortant rotavirus strains, each carrying a different human rotavirus surface protein (VP7 or VP4) representing the most common global serotypes (e.g., G1, G2, G3, G4, and G9 or P[8]). By mimicking natural infection without causing disease, the vaccine induces mucosal and systemic immunity, significantly reducing the incidence of rotavirus-related hospitalizations and deaths. Major versions include Merck's RotaTeq and the Serum Institute of India's ROTASIIL, the latter of which was developed in collaboration with PATH to provide a more affordable and heat-stable option for low- and middle-income countries.
