Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Rotasiil is a live attenuated, pentavalent, human-bovine reassortant rotavirus vaccine developed by the Serum Institute of India (SIIPL). It is designed to provide active immune protection against rotavirus gastroenteritis in infants. The vaccine contains five live attenuated reassortant strains of rotavirus, each combining a human rotavirus surface antigen (serotypes G1, G2, G3, G4, and G9) with a bovine rotavirus (UK strain) backbone. This reassortant approach allows the vaccine to elicit a broad immune response against the most common global rotavirus serotypes. Rotasiil is typically supplied as a lyophilized powder that is reconstituted with a citrate bicarbonate buffer and administered orally as a three-dose series starting at 6 weeks of age. It received approval in India in 2017 and achieved WHO prequalification in 2018, facilitating its use in global immunization programs.
