Roxadustat + iron is a combination used primarily for the treatment of anemia associated with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Roxadustat is a small-molecule oral hypoxia-inducible factor prolyl hydroxylase inhibitor (HIF-PHI) that stimulates endogenous erythropoietin production, enhances erythropoiesis, promotes intestinal iron absorption, increases iron mobilization from stores, and reduces hepcidin levels, thereby improving iron bioavailability and utilization. The addition of iron (oral or intravenous supplementation) helps ensure adequate iron reserves for optimal erythropoiesis, as iron deficiency can limit the response to anemia therapy. Combination therapy achieves greater and faster hemoglobin increases and better management of iron metabolism compared to monotherapy with either component alone[1][2][4].
